He has held this role since September 2014, when his spiritual “father,” Mahant Avaidyanath, passed away. In addition, he founded the Hindu nationalist organization Hindu Yuva Vahini. He is perceived as a social conservative and a Hindutva nationalist.
Early life and Education
On June 5, 1972, Yogi Adityanath was born into a Rajput family in the village of Panchur, Pauri Garhwal, Uttar Pradesh (now in Uttarakhand). His birth certificate read Ajay Mohan Singh Bisht. Anand Singh Bisht, his late father, worked as a forest ranger. Of four brothers and three sisters, he was the second child born in the family. In Uttarakhand, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University.
Sometime in the 1990s, he moved out of his house to join the Ayodhya Ram temple campaign. He also started following Mahant Avaidyanath, the leader of the Gorakhnath Math, during the same period. At that time, the movement for the Ayodhya Ram temple was headed by Mahant Avaidyanath. Adityanath established a school in his home village in 1998 and has been visiting it frequently since being headquartered in Gorakhpur following his initiation.
Following Avaidyanath’s passing on September 12, 2014, Adityanath was elevated to the position of Mahant, or high priest, inside the Gorakhnath Math. Two days later, in the midst of customary Nath sect rites, he was appointed Peethadhishwar (Head Seer) of the Math.
Early political Career
Yogi Adityanath is a member of a certain Hindutva political lineage in Uttar Pradesh that dates back to Mahant Digvijay Nath, who oversaw the idol-installation at the Ayodhya Babri Masjid on December 22, 1949. Both Digvijay Nath and Avaidyanath, his successor, were elected to the Parliament on the Hindu Mahasabha’s ticket. The two threads of Hindu nationalism came together in the 1980s when the BJP and the Sangh Parivar joined the Ayodhya agitation. Even when Avaidyanath joined the BJP in 1991, he remained quite autonomous. Adityanath was elected to the Lok Sabha, the Lower House of the Indian Parliament, four years after he was named Avaidyanath’s successor.
Adityanath founded his own youth organization, Hindu Yuva Vahini, following his first election victory. This organization gained notoriety for its initiatives in eastern Uttar Pradesh and played a significant role in the rapid ascent of Adityanath. Tensions over election ticket distribution have repeatedly arisen between Adityanath and the BJP leadership. But since Adityanath has been a prominent campaigner for the BJP, the party has managed to keep the tensions from rising.
He made the connections between Leftist parties in India and Nepali Maoists a major campaign issue in 2006 and urged Madhesi leaders to reject Maoism in Nepal. While traveling to Azamgarh for an anti-terrorism demonstration in 2008, there were reports of an attack on his convoy. At least six people were hurt in the incident, and one person died.
Adityanath and other BJP officials had assembled in January 2007 to grieve the loss of a man killed in acts of religious violence. After that, the authorities detained him and his allies and put them in Gorkhapur jail, accusing them of disrupting the peace and disobeying prohibitions. His apprehension sparked additional turmoil, during which a number of coaches on the Mumbai-Gorakhpur Godan Express were set on fire by supposedly indignant Hindu Yuva Vahini activists. The local police head and the district magistrate were changed and transferred the day following the arrest.
Member of Parliament
Adityanath was the youngest member of the 12th Lok Sabha when he was elected at the age of 26. He was elected to the Gorakhpur Parliament five times in a row (in the elections of 1998, 1999, 2004, 2009, and 2014).
With a 77% attendance rate in the 16th Lok Sabha, Adityanath has asked 284 questions, taken part in 56 discussions, and introduced three private member bills.
Relations with the BJP
For over ten years, Adityanath and the BJP have had tense relations. He frequently mocked and disparaged the BJP, pointing out that it was diluting the Hindutva doctrine. With the backing of the Hindu Yuva Vahini and the Gorakhnath Math, he had built his own autonomous power base in Eastern Uttar Pradesh and felt confident enough to dictate terms to the BJP. He rebelled by fielding candidates to challenge the BJP’s official slate after feeling that his voice was not being heard. The most well-known instance occurred when Gorakhpur native Radha Mohan Das Agarwal was fielded on a Hindu Mahasabha ticket in 2002 and easily defeated BJP Cabinet Minister Shiv Pratap Shukla. Adityanath threatened to run 70 candidates in the 2007 state assembly election against the candidates from the BJP. But in the end, he came to a compromise. There were rumors that Adityanath ran an anti-BJP campaign during the 2009 Parliamentary elections, which resulted in their defeat.
Even with his sporadic outbursts, BJP leaders and the RSS have managed to maintain Yogi Adityanath’s good humor. He was visited in Gorakhpur by the deputy prime minister L. K. Advani, the head of the RSS Rajendra Singh, and the head of the VHP Ashok Singhal. Adityanath arranged a three-day Virat Hindu Mahasammelan in Gorakhpur from December 22–24, 2006, coinciding with the BJP National Executive Meet in Lucknow. Numerous leaders from the RSS and VHP attended the Mahasammelan despite the controversy, and the group pledged to continue pursuing Hindutva objectives in spite of the BJP’s purported “abandonment” of them.
Adityanath was one of numerous BJP Members of Parliament that disobeyed the party whip regarding the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Parliament in March 2010.
He worked as a campaigner for Pratap Puriji Maharaj, the BJP candidate, in the 2018 Rajasthan state assembly election.
Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh
During the 2017 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, Adityanath was a well-known BJP campaigner. On March 18, 2017, the state administration named him Chief Minister; following the BJP’s victory in the assembly elections, he took the oath of office the following day.
Ministry allocation
Adityanath retained direct control over approximately thirty-six ministries after taking office as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. These ministries included the departments of Home, Housing, Town and Country Planning, Revenue, Food and Civil Supplies, Food Security and Drug Administration, Economics and Statistics, Mines and Minerals, Flood Control, General Administration, Secretariat Administration, Vigilance, Personnel and Appointments, Information, Institutional Finance, Planning, Estate Department, Urban Land, UP State Reorganization Committee, Administration Reforms, Program Implementation, National integration, Infrastructure, Coordination, Language, External Aided project, Relief and Rehabilitation, Public Service Management, Rent Control, Consumer protection, and Weights and measures, among others.
During his inaugural cabinet meeting on April 4, 2017, it was decided to cancel loans totaling ₹363.59 billion (US$4.6 billion) to about 87 lakh (8,700,000) small and marginal farmers in Uttar Pradesh. His government singled out Muslim religious schools and demanded that they produce video proof that their pupils had performed the Indian national song during the country’s 2017 Independence Day celebrations.
Law and Order
Adityanath gave the order to create anti-“romeo” quasi-vigilante squads. He put an end to the smuggling of cows and postponed the results of the UPPSC civil service exam, exams, and interviews till further notice. He made officials promise to donate 100 hours annually to the Swachh Bharat Mission and outlawed the vices of tobacco, paan, and gutka in all state government offices. The Uttar Pradesh police suspended over a hundred “black sheep” officers.
Chief Minister Adityanath has mandated the closure of numerous slaughterhouses since 2017. The tanneries that obtained raw leather from the slaughterhouses suffered as a direct result. The closure of several tanneries was also mandated. In 2017, the value of the tannery industry was predicted to reach 50,0000 crore Rupees. More than 10 lakh people were employed by the sector, either directly or indirectly. Out of the more than 400 tanneries that were operating in Jajamau, Kanpur, CM Adityanath has closed almost 200 of them since 2018 through executive orders.
During the initial ten months of his first tenure, he interacted with the police four times per day. The state administration received a notice from the National Human Rights Commission, and the Uttar Pradesh government was also served with a warning and notice by a three-judge panel of the Indian Supreme Court.
He erected hoardings containing the names, images, and addresses of protestors following the Uttar Pradesh demonstrations against the Citizenship Amendment Act. The posters weren’t taken down until the High Court’s ruling, which deemed his government’s actions “shameless” and a “unwarranted interference in privacy”.
