One of the most successful Indian actresses to feature in Bollywood and South Indian films is Rekha Ganeshan, better known by her stage name Rekha. She made her film debut in 1966 as a young artist and went on to star in numerous financially successful productions. The actress made appearances in over 150 films during the course of a career spanning more than 40 years, including arthouse productions. In addition to winning a National Award for the performance, she immortalized Umrao Jaan, the courtesan from the 1981 film of the same name. The Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian honor in India, was bestowed upon her by the Indian government in 2010.<\/p>
