North Korea’s Supreme Leader, Kim Jong-un, assumed the role from his father, Kim Jong-il. He is currently the youngest state leader in the world to be in office and the first supreme leader of North Korea to be born after the country’s founding. Shortly after his father’s passing in 2011, Kim Jong-un assumed the role of Supreme Leader of the “hermit kingdom,” succeeding his father Kim Jong-il in all obligations. He has a reputation for being a brutal and totalitarian leader.

He has removed a number of prominent figures who he saw as a challenge to his authority since becoming office. He became well-known for living a more Westernized lifestyle than his father’s traditional way of living, engaging with workers and troops, appearing in the media, and presenting an open approach to the public. However, the difficulties his father encountered while in power—such as extreme poverty, a collapsed economy, and diplomatic problems with the United States and South Korea—have not been surmounted by this North Korean despot.
