Sundar Pichai, full name Pichai Sundararajan, is an Indian-American business executive and one of the prominent figures in the technology industry. He was born on July 12, 1972, in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. Pichai is best known for his role as the CEO of Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company.

Sundar Pichai is the driving force behind Google’s ideological journey. He has been with Google since 2004 and has played a leading role in many of the company’s revolutionary projects, such as the Android operating system, Google Chrome, and Google Glass (which was later discontinued). In 2015, Sundar Pichai became the CEO of Google.

He was born as Pichai Sundararajan on July 12, 1972, in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. His father, Regunatha Pichai, worked as an electrical engineer for the British conglomerate GEC and managed a factory that made electrical components. His mother used to be a stenographer before having children. He has one brother.

• Sundar Pichai had completed B.Tech in Metallurgical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur and earned a scholarship to study materials science and semiconductor physics from Stanford University, USA.  He started his career as an engineer and product manager at a semiconductor maker (Applied materials) in Silicon Valley, USA.
• Sundar completed MBA from Wharton in 2002 and joined McKinsey & Company as a consultant. Finally, he joined Google in 2004.

Google incurred $2.1 billion (around ₹17,500 crore) in severance and related expenses during its 2023 layoffs, which affected over 12,000 employees. In this month alone, the company has already spent $700 million on severance charges for additional layoffs, encompassing more than 1,000 roles. Alphabet, the parent company of Google, disclosed these figures in its fourth-quarter earnings release on Tuesday.

In January 2023, Alphabet announced plans to cut 12,000 jobs, or 6 per cent, of its global workforce. This was the biggest layoff in the history of Google, but was “essential” for the company, chief executive Sundar Pichai had said earlier.
