Steve Smith, the son of an English mother Gillian and an Australian father Peter, has a chemistry degree, was born on June 2, 1989 in Kogarah, Sydney. Before leaving at the age of 17 to play club cricket for Sevenoaks Vine in the Kent Cricket League in England, Steve Smith attended Menai High School. Surrey picked him for their second XI because he had performed so well for Sevenoaks.

  • Steve Smith was born Steven Peter Devereux Smith, on June 2, 1989, in Kogarah, Sydney, New South Wales. His father, Peter Smith, worked as a chemist. His mother, Gillian, was a homemaker. Since his birth, Steve holds both Australian and English citizenships, as his father is Australian and his mother is English.
  • Since childhood, Steve was heavily invested in playing cricket. He graduated from the ‘Menai High School’ in Illawong, Sydney. He played cricket extensively throughout his school years. As a result, his academics suffered. However, he had been bringing significant glory to his high school by leading his school team to many wins in various inter-school tournaments. Eventually, he dropped out of high school.
  • He had dual citizenship and thus had to decide whether to play for England or for Australia. He moved to England at the age of 17 and joined a local club called ‘Sevenoaks Vine’ in the ‘Kent Cricket League.’ His consistent good performances led him to be considered for the county team of Surrey.
  • He also had an option to play for New South Wales. Although Surrey paid him much higher, Steve later chose to play in Australia.

Steve Smith Career

On February 5, 2010, Steve Smith made his T20 International debut in Melbourne. He was a leg-spinner in his time with the team. In the same month against West Indies, he made his One Day International debut. In July 2010, against Pakistan at Lords, he made his test debut. During this series, everyone took notice of his hitting abilities. He was then assigned the job of a batsman in the Ashes series in 2010-2011.

Smith went to India in 2013 after leaving in 2011. Smith’s first century was scored in 2013. In Sharjah against Pakistan in 2014, he scored his maiden ODI century. At the World Cup in 2015, he scored a lot of goals. His team won the World Cup thanks to his century in the semi-finals and a half-century in the final. In addition, he’s participated in IPL and BBL league matches.

Smith was found guilty of tampering the ball in the third test match against South Africa in March 2018, along with first batsman Cameron Bancroft and vice-captain David Warner. Smith has been banned from international and domestic cricket for a year by Cricket Australia. Following the ban’s completion, he will be unable to assume a leadership position for another year. The Rajasthan Royals of the IPL cancelled his contract for the 2018 season as a result of this occurrence.

  • Following an uproar, Steve was removed from captaincy and was replaced by Tim Paine. Steve was banned from international and domestic cricket for a year after an investigation by ‘Cricket Australia’ confirmed the charges.

  1. He attended school till he was 17 after which he dropped out in order to follow his dream of playing cricket.
  2. The first club that he played for was Seven Oaks Vine in England in the premier division of the Kent Cricket League and performed so well that he was offered to play for Surrey’s Second XI.
  3. Because of the difference in the nationality of his parents, Steve holds dual citizenship of Australia as well as Britain.
  4. He was originally selected as a right-arm leg spinner for Australian national team but later played mainly as a batsman.
  5. In 2008, he was chosen as the member of the Australian team for the Under 19 Cricket World Cup which was held in Malaysia and he scored 114 runs taking 7 wickets in 4 matches.
  6. He made his first-class debut on January 25, 2008, playing for Australian Men’s Professional first-class team, New South Wales against Western Australia where he scored 33 runs in 1 inning.
  7. He was also the part of New South Wales that went on to win 2009’s Twenty20 Champions League.
  8. Steve had played 13 First-Class matches by the end of 2009-2010 season and had a batting average of 50 and although his bowling was not that effective, he improved with time and even got praised by former Australian national team’s captain Shane Warne.

  15. In the IPL, he was first chosen by Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2010 as the replacement for former international Newzealand cricketer Jesse Ryder.
  16. Steve was taken by Kochi Tuskers Kerala in 2011 for an estimated $200k but could not play in that season due to an ankle injury. In the next season, Kochi Tuskers were removed from the IPL and he was chosen by the Pune Warriors.
  17. His first match for Pune Warriors got him ‘The Man Of The Match’ award where he scored 39 runs in 32 balls and made his team win against Mumbai Indians.
