Yogarṣi Swami Ramdev ji was born to Smt. Gulab Devi and Shri Ram Niwas in a village of Haryana. He had his early education in a village school. At the age of 14 he was admitted to the Gurukul at Kalwa (near Jind, Haryana) where under the blessed tutelage of Acharya Shri Baldevji he studied Sanskrit and Yoga, and earned a postgraduate (Acharya) degree with specialization in Sanskrit Vyakaraṇa, Yoga, Darśana, Vedas and Upaniṣads, later he was very much inspired by the life and writings of Maharṣi Dayanand and he thoroughly studied Satyartha Prakasa, Ṛgvedadibhaṣyabhumikā etc. Along-side the magnetism of Maharṣi. Childhood & Early Life
- Baba Ramdev was born as Ramkrishna Yadav in 1965, in Alipur village of Mahendragarh district, Haryana, India, to Ram Nivas Yadav and Gulabo Devi. Ram Nivas Yadav and Gulabo Devi.
- He studied up to the eighth grade in a school in Shahjadpur. From a young age he was interested in yoga and went on to join Arya Gurukul, Khanpur, where he studied Sanskrit, Indian scriptures and yoga.
- He read a book called ‘Yogik Sadhan’, written by Aurobindo Ghosh and was deeply influenced by it. He decided to renounce the worldly ways of life and adopt Sanyas (monastic living). He was initiated into the ascetic order by Swami Shankerdevji Maharaj and after becoming a sanyasi, Ramkrishna Yadav adopted the name “Baba Ramdev”.
- He then went to Jind district and joined the Kalva gurukul from where he received a postgraduate (Ācārya) degree with specialization in Sanskrit Vyākarana, Yoga, Darśana, Vedas and Upanishads.
Later Life
- He started teaching yoga to the villagers across Haryana while still at the Kalva gurukul. It is believed that later on he went to the Himalayas where he spent several years.
- He then moved to Haridwar in Uttarakhand where he studied ancient Indian scriptures at Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya. He also practiced intense self-discipline and meditation.
- Baba Ramdev established Divya Yoga Mandir Trust in 1995 in order to promote yoga. In this endeavor he was accompanied by Acharya Karamveer and Acharya Balkrishna. Acharya Karmaveer is an expert in yoga and Veda while Acharya Balkrishna is a physician with a degree in ayurveda. The headquarters of the trust is at the Kripalu Bagh Ashram of Haridwar. Baba Ramdev teaches yoga mainly at this ashram.
- Baba Ramdev primarily teaches the Pranayama form of yoga. The program consists of six breathing exercises in a specific sequence. Most of the other yoga teachers place more emphasis on the practice of asanas (yoga postures) while Baba Ramdev focuses more on the breathing exercises.
- He became a very well-known yoga teacher and in 2003 he began appearing on Aastha TV in a series promoting yoga. The show proved to be very popular with the audiences and he gained a large following.

Controversie and Baba Ramdev
- March 2005 –
113 employees of Divya Yoga Mandir Trust, Haridwar started an agitation for minimum wages and employees’ rights such as coverage under the Provident Fund and Employees’ State Insurance schemes.
After discussions and meetings agreement was reached between the workers, management and the district administration.
However, some agitating workers were dismissed by the Trustees after being alleged for sabotage.
Their case was taken up by a trade union controlled by the Communist Party of India (Marxist). They are still to be reinstated. - January 2006 –
In January 2006, Brinda Karat, a senior leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) accused the Divya Pharmacy, owned by Divya Yog Mandir Trust for using human and animal bones in their medicines. - December 2006 –
Swami Ramdev claimed to cure diseases such as AIDS and cancer through yoga and ayurvedic drugs sold by his Divya Yoga Mandir Trust.

Baba Ramdev getting into IT business? Patanjali’s Rolta bid sparks buzz
Rolta first defaulted on foreign currency loans in 2016. After dodging bankruptcy thrice, it finally landed on NCLT table after Union Bank, one of the lenders, filed a petition.
Patanjali Ayurved has reportedly expressed interest in buying the debt-ridden technology firm Rolta India. The Baba Ramdev-led company has made a cash offer of Rs 830 crore, just weeks after Pune-based Ashdan Properties was declared the highest bidder for Rolta, as per an ET report.
Patanjali Ayurved has approached the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) to include its offer. A panel will decide the firm’s inclusion in the bidding process.
Kamal Singh promoted Rolta is a defence focussed software company. The firm was admitted to the bankruptcy process in January 2023. It owes Union Bank of India (UBI) a total of Rs 7,100 crore and another Rs 6,699 crore to unsecured foreign bond holders led by Citigroup.
Rolta first defaulted on foreign currency loans in 2016. After dodging bankruptcy thrice, it finally landed on NCLT table after Union Bank filed a petition. The company provides services in Defense and Home Land Security, Power, Financial Services, Manufacturing, Retail and Healthcare. In the financial year 2022, the company had a loss of ₹1000 crore. While the revenue during this period was only Rs 38 crore.
Rolta’s real estate, especially in Mumbai, could be a possible draw for the bidders. ET added that Patanjali Ayurved may also be looking at Rolta’s IT infrastructure to firm up its plans for a home delivery application.
