Rajnath Singh: Political Career

Bharatiya Jana Sangh

In 1974, Rajnath Singh entered politics as the secretary of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the party that preceded the Bharatiya Janata Party, in Mirzapur. He was named Jana Sangh’s District President a year later.

JP Movement

Singh joined the Janata Party after being influenced by Jayaprakash Narayan’s JP Movement and won the Mirzapur MLA seat. Because of his affiliation with the JP Movement, he was imprisoned during the National Emergency. He was re-elected as an MLA in 1977 following his release.

Association with BJP

Ram Prakash Gupta was the Chief Minister before him, and he took over as President after Mayawati was named Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.
