  • He made headlines for mocking Indian Cricket Team after they lost the ICC World T20 2016 Semi-final match to West Indies. Rahim took the matter to social media to express his happiness, which agitated Indian fans. He then had to apologise for the same.
  • Mushfiqur Rahim was criticized for trying to hit his teammate, Nasum Ahmed, following an incident in the eliminator of the Bangabandhu T20 Cup where both of them were going for the same catch. Both of the fielders avoided a collision and the catch was taken by Mushfiqur Rahim. Mushfiqur Rahim, who was captain of Beximco Dhaka, was visibly annoyed with his teammate and threatened to throw a punch at his teammate. The video that captured the incident has gone viral on Twitter. Mushfiqur Rahim has since apologized to his teammate and the BCB fined Mushfiqur Rahim 25% of his match fees and issued one demerit point for the incident.

Retirement

Mushfiqur Rahim has confirmed his retirement from T20Is from September 4, 2022. Mushfiqur Rahim made the statement on his official Twitter account, claiming that he will now focus on ODIs and Tests. Mushfiqur Rahim made his choice just over a month before the commencement of the T20 World Cup in Australia.

Vice-captaincy

Mushfiqur Rahim was named vice-captain of Bangladesh’s tour of Zimbabwe in August 2009. The role was vacant since the previous holder, Shakib Al Hasan, was filling in as captain for the injured Mashrafe Mortaza. Bangladesh won the five-match ODI series, 4-1. Mushfiqur Rahim struck 98 in the final ODI, surpassing his previous best score in List A matches of 58, to lead his team to victory. Mushfiqur Rahim finished the trip as Bangladesh’s fourth-highest run scorer, with 169 runs at an average of 56.33.

On September 20, 2011, Mushfiqur Rahim was named Bangladesh captain, succeeding Shakib Al Hasan after a dismal tour of Zimbabwe. Bangladesh won two of three games at the 2012 Asia Cup, under Mushfiqur Rahim’s captaincy, and advanced to the final for the first time, losing to Pakistan. In April, his grade A+ central contract was extended. On 11 March 2013, during the first test of the Sri Lanka tour in Galle, Mushfiqur Rahim became the first Bangladeshi to make a double century, topping the previous maximum of 190 scored by Mohammed Ashraful earlier in the day.

In February 2020, when Zimbabwe toured Bangladesh, he struck an undefeated 203 runs, becoming the only Bangladeshi batter to score three double-hundreds in Test cricket.
