“Ask Zelenskyy for money”: The ruler of the United Arab Emirates rejects Netanyahu’s demand to compensate the Palestinians
US President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan mockingly advised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to ask Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for financial assistance in order to pay salaries to Palestinian laborers who are prohibited from entering Israel.
Following the October 7 Hamas terror attacks on the Jewish country, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly asked UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to provide unemployment benefits to Palestinian workers who Israel had prohibited from entering its territory. Netanyahu was reportedly denied.
Al Nahyan mockingly said to Netanyahu, “Ask Zelenskyy for money,” alluding to the president of Ukraine, according to Axios, which cited unidentified sources.
Axios reports that Zayed mockingly instructed Netanyahu to request funding from Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, in order to cover the Palestinian workers’ stipend. He proposed that Zelenskyy use the international aid that Ukraine was receiving as a result of its conflict with Russia to pay for the laborers.
According to an Israeli official, a few weeks ago, Netanyahu approached Al Nahyan with the request.
According to a UAE official who spoke to Axios, “the idea that Arab countries will come in to rebuild and pay the bill for what’s currently happening is wishful thinking.”
Even though the president of the United Arab Emirates had promised to assist Israel, Axios reported that he was “stunned” by this request. This was due to the Emirati ruler’s perception that it was strange that Israel was requesting payment from it for an issue that had been brought about by its assault on the Palestinian territory.
According to reports, Israel wants the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and other Arab nations to assist in rebuilding Gaza following the war.
Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s stance is consistent with that of a number of Arab nations that have declared they would not pay to keep the status quo in place in the Palestinian territories following the conflict.
Before the Israel-Hamas conflict broke out, over a lakh Palestinians from the West Bank were allowed to travel to Israel for employment, according to the Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT). Following the 1,200 Israeli people killed by Hamas on October 7, Israel banned Palestinian laborers from entering its borders.
Over 23,000 Palestinians have died as a result of the Israeli offensive, which has also caused significant destruction to the small coastal enclave and forced majority of its 2.3 million residents to flee, exacerbating the humanitarian situation.
