Muizzu was appointed Male’s Minister of Housing and Environment in 2012 and remained in that role until his resignation in 2023. He was in charge of the Sinamale Bridge and several other infrastructure projects while a member of the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA).
Muizzu became part of the Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) following the 2018 presidential election, and in 2019 he was named vice president. He became the first mayor of Male to be chosen directly by the populace in 2021, and he served a five-year term as mayor.
