On November 5, 1955, Mary Jo “M. J.” Shannon (née Campbell; born 1934), the owner of a children’s clothes store, and Robert True “Bob” Houghton (1931–1975), an engineer, welcomed Jenner into the world. She was the older of the two children.— M. J. and Bob separated when she was seven years old, leaving their younger sister Karen Casey (née Houghton; born 1958) to grow up with their mother. Businessman Harry Shannon (1926–2003), with whom M. J. eventually remarried, assisted in raising Jenner and her sister.
