How did Kim Kardashian become famous?
After graduating from high school in 1998, Kim Kardashian became a personal assistant to Paris Hilton, an American hotel heiress and socialite. Kardashian remained mostly unknown until early 2007, when a sex tape featuring her and her boyfriend, Ray J, leaked online. The attention helped the Kardashian family land a reality TV series.
Early Life
Kim Kardashian is an American television celebrity and entrepreneur who was born in Los Angeles, California, on October 21, 1980. Her personal life, which was largely documented on the hit reality series Keeping Up with the Kardashians (2007–21), brought her international recognition.
A pirated sex tape depicting Kim and her then-boyfriend, R&B artist Ray J, surfaced online early in 2007. Kim filed a lawsuit against the video’s distributor and eventually won an out-of-court settlement. The Kardashians’ daily life, including Bruce Jenner’s eventual transformation into a woman, were chronicled in the reality TV series Keeping Up with the Kardashians, which was made possible by the attention the family received. The show was a ratings hit when it debuted on the E! channel in October 2007. While each member of the family achieved a different degree of popularity, Kim—who was renowned for her attractive appearance and voluptuous figure—became a cultural phenomenon.
Kardashian went to the all-girls Roman Catholic Marymount High School in Los Angeles. Her father defended O. J. Simpson, a football player, in his 1994 murder trial. Kardashian’s godfather is Simpson. Cancer claimed Kardashian’s father’s life in 2003. During her adolescent years, Kardashian was good friends with Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, who brought her initial notoriety. Her father promised to buy her a new automobile when she totaled hers when she was sixteen, but only if she accepted full responsibility for any future damages. After that, she started working for four years at Body, a neighborhood clothes store in Encino, California, helping to open the Calabasas site. In 2000, following one’s entry into her marriage she resigned.
Career
Beginnings (2003–2006)
By 2003, Ray J’s sister Brandy, an R&B singer and actress, hired Kardashian as her personal stylist. Subsequently, Sonja Norwood, the siblings’ mother and manager, claimed that although she had given Kardashian permission to use her American Express credit card for “one and only one” purchase in 2004, Kardashian, along with her sisters Khloé and Kourtney, had charged over $120,000 in unauthorized purchases to the card. Norwood further claimed that the majority of the accusations were related to purchases made in 2006 and 2007 at Kardashian’s family-run shop, following Kardashian’s departure from Norwood’s daughter’s employment. Norwood also claimed that she did not press charges because her kids begged her to, instead bringing her accusations directly to Kardashian, and that Kardashian expressed regret and pledged to pay back the loan. After receiving no money, Norwood filed a lawsuit in 2008. Kardashian refutes each and every one of these claims. According to reports, the parties came to a private settlement in 2009, and the lawsuit was dropped.
In 2006, Kardashian started serving as a stylist for her childhood friend Paris Hilton. She was often pictured going to events and parties with Hilton, and she made appearances in a number of episodes of the reality series The Simple Life. Formerly meeting Kardashian and her mother Kris Jenner in 2005, Sheeraz Hasan, a PR strategist for Hilton, said in a 2020 20/20 television special that Kardashian was “ready to do whatever it takes” to build a great brand. In the same interview, freelance photographer Rick Mendozza, working for the tabloid TMZ, said that after Kardashian went with Hilton to Hyde, a popular spot in Hollywood at the time, he kept getting calls from tabloids asking him to take pictures of Kardashian for the the following three years. Kardashian claimed in 2021 that Hilton “quite literally gave me a career.” And I accept that completely.
Breakthrough (2007–2010)
A 2003 sex tape that Kardashian had recorded with musician Ray J was discovered online and became viral in February of 2007. Kim Kardashian, Superstar filed a lawsuit against Vivid Entertainment, the company that distributed the movie. Three months later, she filed for bankruptcy and settled for an estimated US$5 million, allowing Vivid to distribute and sell the tape.
It has been estimated that the movie’s sales brought in around US$1.5 million during the first six weeks of release. Later, she and her family came under fire from a number of media sources for utilizing the release of the sex tape as a publicity ploy for their upcoming reality program. A few months later, in October 2007, Kardashian, her mother Kris Jenner, and her stepparent Caitlyn Jenner (then Bruce Jenner), Her half-sisters Kendall and Kylie Jenner, as well as her siblings Rob, Kourtney, and Khloé, started to participate in the reality television show Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Kourtney and Kim Take New York and Kourtney and Kim Take Miami are two of the spin-offs that were created as a result of the series’ success for E!. After 294 episodes, the flagship series came to an end in June 2021.
Continued exposure (2011–2016)
Kardashian, along with sisters Kourtney and Khloe, published a novel called Dollhouse and her third fragrance, “Gold” in 2011. In a deal reportedly valued at $50 million, E! renewed Keeping Up with the Kardashians for two more seasons in 2012. Kardashian debuted her fourth fragrance that year, “True Reflection,” which she promoted in collaboration with Dress for Success , and her fifth fragrance, “Glam,” which was sold at Debenhams. In the romantic drama Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor (2013), which Tyler Perry produced, wrote, and directed, Kardashian landed the part of an aspirational therapist’s coworker. Despite the movie’s minor box office success—it made US$53.1 million worldwide—the reviews were unfavorable, and Kardashian won the Worst Supporting Actress Razzie Award.
In June 2014, Kardashian published Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, a mobile game for Android and iPhone. To become a Hollywood star or starlet is the game’s goal. The game has a free to play format, which allows you to download it for free but pay for in-game things. In its first five days of release, it made US$1.6 million, proving to be a success. The game’s developer, Glu Mobile, revealed in July that it was the fifth-highest earning title in the Apple App Store. In the adult cartoon comedy American Dad!, she provided the voice of an extraterrestrial on September 21, 2014.
In May 2015, Kardashian published her portfolio book, Selfish, a 325-page compilation of her own self-taken images. Critics gave it excellent reviews, with Kat Brown of The Telegraph calling it “oddly moving” and “unexpectedly revealing”. In the same year, she debuted an emoji pack for iOS devices called Kimoji and modeled the cover of Vogue Spain’s August issue. Within the first week of its release, the app ranked among the top 5 most downloaded apps, making it a best-seller.

North West, Kardashian and West’s first child, was born on June 15, 2013, in Los Angeles. According to grandmother Kris Jenner, her unusual name has a “sweet” significance. “The way [Kim] explained it to me was that North means highest power and she says that North is their highest point together,”
2. Saint West
West and Kardashian’s second child, Saint West, was born on Dec. 5, 2015, in L.A. West gets the credit for choosing Saint’s uncommon name. Apparently, the rapper was “going back and forth for a while” before landing on Saint because he wanted the name to have “spiritual significance.”

Kim Kardashian Is Relaunching Her Beauty Empire
KKW Beauty is officially dead. Now, meet SKKN By Kim, her nine-product skin-care line.
I’ve been given 15 minutes with Kim Kardashian. (On the phone, audio only.) It’s not a lot of time to get into the real meat and potatoes of her upcoming brand launch — SKKN by Kim — but I’m well aware that Kardashian doesn’t need the press. As I’m writing this, she and her family are all over social media as sister Kourtney has just participated in holy matrimony with Travis Barker in Portofino. The Kravis news cycle is an entirely fresh one from the previous week, when our interview actually happened — those headlines revolved around her wearing Marilyn Monroe’s iconic dress to the Met Gala and her first stint as a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition cover girl — in opera gloves, no less. This is not to mention any of the Kim-adjacent headlines that week, like sister Kendall Jenner’s confusing approach to cucumber cutting. (Yes, there were headlines on this.)
SKKN by Kim will debut on June 21, which is also the day that KKW Beauty made its debut, five years to the day. Additionally, it avoids the highlight and contour sticks that helped establish KKW Beauty, at least for the time being. In fact, it’s eschewing almost every notion of a trend. The cosmetics business has been obsessive about appealing to Generation Z, championing “skinimalism,” and extolling the virtues of “proprietary ingredients”—ingredients that other brands purport not to use or haven’t yet discovered. To begin with, Kardashian informed me that she did not wish to limit SKKN to a particular group of people. “I gave my grandma all the samples, I gave a focus group of people that were my friends that are my age to my cousin who’s my mom’s age, to see how everyone felt about the line,” Says she. “It’s critical that there be no upper age limit. It might even reach a very mature skin.”
