Family and Early Life
Jin was raised in a prosperous household thanks to his father’s successful executive profession. He grew up with his elder brother in a typical family, surrounded by his mother’s love. His brother shared his passion in music and exposed him to the world of hip-hop when he was eleven years old. He entered Boseong High School after completing elementary school, where he eventually graduated in 2010. At the age of fifteen, he was discovered studying when he was approached by an SM Entertainment scout. Impressed by his appearance, the scout urged him to try out for the firm. Jin, however, did not go since he thought it was a hoax.
Jin decided to focus in acting and theater after completing his education and developing a passion in performing arts. He enrolled in Konkuk University’s Art program. He was found by a Big Hit Entertainment scout while he was headed to the university, and the scout persuaded him to try out for the company. Jin joined the BTS project in 2012, along with trainees Kim Nam-joon, Kim Tae-hyung, Jeon Jung-kook, Jung Ho-seok, Park Ji-min, and Min Yoon-gi, despite having no prior experience in the music industry. Following a year of rigorous creative training and rehearsals, Jin made his debut as a member of Big Hit Entertainment’s inaugural project, BTS.
Jin’s BTS Musical Career
Jin debuted alongside the BTS members in 2013 with the lead single “No More Dream” off their debut single, “2 Cool 4 Skool.” They shocked viewers with their acrobatics and unique hip-hop style when they debuted on the music program M! Countdown. They succeeded in establishing themselves as new participants in the genre even though they initially had little effect on the music landscape. Songs including “We On,” “Coffee,” “BTS Cypher Pt.1,” and “Paldogangsan” were included in their debut EP, “O!RUL8,2?” (2013), which was released in the same year.
The trio started to get notice the next year as a result of the Los Angeles-filmed variety show American Hustle Life (2014). Following the release of their successful EP Skool Luv Affair (2014), which included the songs Just One Day and Spine Breaker Outro: Propose, the trio made a comeback in 2015 with the first installment of The Most Beautiful Moment in Life. With the help of this EP’s songs, the group became well-known both domestically and abroad: I Need U, Hold Me Tight, Converse High, and Dope. Jin co-wrote the tracks Boyz with Fun and Outro: Love Is Not Over for The Most Beautiful Moment in Life.
The Most Beautiful Moment in Life-Part 2 (2015), an album that included the songs Run, Butterfly, House of Cards, and Silver Spoon, was released in the same year. Wings, a fifteen-song album that included solos by each member of the group—Begin (Jungkook), Lie (Jimin), Stigma (V), First Love (Suga), Reflection (RM), MAMA (J-Hope), and Awake (Jin)—and the blockbuster song Blood Sweat & Tears helped propel BTS to popularity in 2016. Later releases by the group, such the Love Yourself series, Her (2017), Answer (2018), Tear (2018), and Face Yourself (2018), exceeded the popularity of this album.
The first album of the new period, Map of the Soul: Persona (2019), was published in 2019. Map of the Soul: 7 followed on February 21, 2020. This album featured Jin’s solo track, Moon, as well as his participation with the vocal line, which includes Kim, V, and Jungkook, at 00:00 (zero o’clock).
Jin has worked with V on the composition and performance of the Hwarang OST, “It’s Definitely You,” in addition to his work with the group. After releasing “Awake,” Jin’s second solo single, “This Night,” was released in June 2019.
