Bobby Deol Acting Career:
When Deol was ten years old, he made his feature debut in Dharam Veer (1977). Subsequently, Deol made his adult Bollywood debut in Rajkumar Santoshi’s Barsaat (1995), costarring Twinkle Khanna. Deol portrays Badal, a young man of intelligence and naivety who relocates from a small hamlet to a large city and becomes entangled in the web of dishonest law enforcement and criminal organizations while also falling in love. The movie was a huge hit at the box office and won him the Best Male Debut Filmfare Award.
Generally regarded as his breakout performance, Deol played the lead in Rajiv Rai’s suspense thriller Gupt: The Hidden Truth in 1997. In the cast, Deol portrayed Sahil, a young man unfairly imprisoned after being falsely convicted of killing his stepfather over an engagement proposal, together with Manisha Koirala, Kajol, Paresh Rawal, Om Puri, and Raj Babbar. He gets away and finds the true murderer. Gupt: The Hidden Truth was a financial success and received critical accolades for both its soundtrack and plot. Deol made her Bollywood debut costarring with Aishwarya Rai in Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya that same year. The movie had a mediocre amount of success at the box office.
Deol worked with Neha in the Vidhu Vinod Chopra movie Kareeb in 1998. Deol portrayed Birju, a careless young man from a Himachal Pradeshi upper-middle-class family who enjoyed small-time theft and dishonesty. He costarred with Preity Zinta and Raakhee in Abbas Mustan’s military drama Soldier later in 1998. Deol portrayed the enigmatic Vicky, who was eventually identified as Raju, the son of Vijay Malhotra who was found guilty of smuggling weapons. Soldier was a profitable film.
Deol worked with his brother Sunny Deol in the 1999 film Dillagi, which was directed by the former. The movie is famous for being the first that Sunny Deol both co-directed and co-starred in with Bobby Deol. This combination, which included Shaheed (2002), Apne (2007), and Yamla Pagla Deewana (2011), was repeated on March 23, 1931. The two play brothers Ranvir and Rajvir in Dillagi, battling it out for Shalini’s (Urmila Matondkar) love.
In 2000, Deol starred with Rani Mukerji in the action drama Badal, which Raj Kanwar directed. The movie takes place in 1984, during a time when Delhi and Punjab were experiencing unrest. Deol portrays Badal, a young boy who grows up to become a feared terrorist because of his resentment and hatred toward the authorities for wrongfully depriving him of his family and friends. Badal witnesses the massacre of his family and the villagers by the dishonest Police Inspector Jai Singh Rana (Ashutosh Rana). The Devil’s Own (1997), starring Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt, served as the inspiration for the movie. Badal achieved financial success. After that, he returned to Rani Mukerji and costarred with Karisma Kapoor in Hum To Mohabbat Karega (2000).
Deol featured in Indra Kumar’s Aashiq in 2001 (though it was filmed in 2000), costarring with Karisma Kapoor and Rahul Dev. After that, he starred with Kareena Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, and Bipasha Basu in Abbas-Mustan’s thriller Ajnabee. Bobby plays Raj, Priya Malhotra’s (Kapoor) new husband in the movie, which is an adaptation of the 1992 American thriller Consenting Adults. After moving to Switzerland and initially making friends with his neighbors, Kumar and Basu, Raj gets caught up in a web of lies and extramarital affairs. Deol’s performance did not impress Ziya Us Salaam of The Hindu, who said that he “only occasionally manages to transmit fear of the fugitive.” Rediff.com said that Ajay Devgan in The Legend of Bhagat Singh outperformed him in terms of performance and that Devgan had the benefit of a greater script and a better director. He was criticized for his loud acting. One of India’s best performers, Devgan is eager to try his hand at several parts and is said to have dropped weight to look the part. Despite Deol’s best efforts, shouting and acting at the same time is challenging.”
Humraaz, Abbas-Mustan’s romantic thriller, earned him a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Drama. Inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s 1954 film Dial M For Murder (which was adapted in 1998 as A Perfect Murder) , Deol plays the lead role in a romantic triangle alongside Akshaye Khanna and Ameesha Patel. Chitra Mahesh of The Hindu wrote, “Deol spends the entire first half looking moony eyed and spaced out, but overcomes the stupor towards the end where he actually gives a good performance.” The film garnered positive reviews from critics. David Dhawan’s Chor Machaaye Shor, in which Deol costarred with Paresh Rawal, Shilpa Shetty, Bipasha Basu, and Om Puri, was Deol’s last movie of 2002. He performed the role of Shyam, a small-time criminal who finds some millions-worth of diamonds.

Career fluctuations and sabbatical (2004–2013)
After taking a break from acting in 2003, Deol made a comeback to the big screen with Kismat (2004), starring alongside Priyanka Chopra. In the drama Bardaasht, which was based on a script by Vikram Bhatt, Deol played the deserted army officer Aditya Shrivastav alongside Rahul Dev and Lara Dutta. The movie tackles issues of justice, corruption, and police violence. Subsequently, Deol portrayed Kunaljit Singh/Vikramjeet Singh, a Lieutenant Commander in Anil Sharma’s Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo.
Although it was undoubtedly Deol’s most well-known movie to date and starred an ensemble cast that included Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar, the movie was a financial failure despite the excitement and high box office predictions. He was praised, yet, for the part that had him wear a pugh or turban, which attracted additional attention from the Punjabi community and led to remarks stating that he looks better in a turban.
As the affluent businessman Avinash Malhotra, who believes his wife Sanjana (Lara Dutta) is having an affair with Rohit (Milind Soman), Deol acted in Vikram Bhatt’s thriller Jurm in 2005. Numerous critics appreciated Bobby Deol’s performance, with Rediff.com’s Vivek Fernandes stating, “Bobby Deol, Bhatt’s schoolmate, does his alma mater proud with his controlled performance.”
It’s encouraging that his candor has a feeling of maturity.” In Mani Shankar’s war film Tango Charlie, Deol played Tarun Chauhan, an Indian trooper from the 101st BSF Battalion, who was fighting Bodo terrorists in Upper Assam. He costarred with Sanjay Dutt, Sunil Shetty, and Ajay Devgan. In the romantic picture Barsaat, starring Suneel Darshan, he played after this one as the aspirational young Indian Arav, who becomes caught up in a romantic triangle with Bipasha Basu and Priyanka Chopra after moving to the US.
Ziya bhai Salaam of The Hindu concluded, “A moth-eaten love triangle with all the stereotypes Bollywood survives on – a devoted wife with her karva chauth ki thali, the other woman with her mini-skirts, a joint family, songs, festivities…..” The film was a critical and commercial disaster. This Barsaat lacks any sense of renewal; it is only saturated with mediocrity.”The girls are ready with their curls and curves, the guy just appears lost, making you wonder if Bobby has grown even an inch as an actor since he made his debut in Rajkumar Santoshi’s film of the same name,” she said, expressing her dissatisfaction with Deol’s performance.
In Dosti: Friends Forever, he played Karan with Kareena Kapoor, Lara Dutta, and Akshay Kumar, marking his last appearance of 2005. along with Juhi Chawla. He portrays a wealthy businessman who is struggling financially and in his relationships with women once more. Even though the movie did not do well in India, it was a huge hit in the UK, where it made approximately £888,000, making it the highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2005.
Return to acting (2017–present)
Alongside his brother Sunny, Deol attempted a comeback in 2017 with the film Poster Boys, directed by Shreyas Talpade. Declared a flop, the movie was unable to restore Deol’s reputation. Deol starred opposite Salman Khan and Jacqueline Fernandez in the action film Race 3 in 2018 as Yash. With a global gross of ₹303 crore, it was a box office success despite the bad reviews. It rose to become the sixth-highest grossing Hindi movie of 2018. It was Deol’s comeback to the screen. In 2018, he also played the role of Kalaa in the comedy Yamla Pagla Deewana: Phir Se, alongside Sunny Deol, Dharmendra, and Kriti Kharbanda. He appeared in the comedy Housefull 4 in 2019 with a group of actors that included Akshay Kumar, The film, directed by Farhad Samji, starring Riteish Deshmukh and Kriti Kharbanda, was released on October 25, 2019. After earning ₹300 crores globally, the movie became a huge commercial success.
In the 2020 Netflix original film Class of ’83, he portrayed a police officer. Based on the novel The Class of ’83, the movie narrates the tale of a brave police officer who is demoted to the dean of the police academy. Netflix and Red Chillies Entertainment collaborated on Class of ’83, their third project together after the original shows Bard of Blood and Betaal. Although the movie got mixed reviews when it debuted on Netflix on August 21, 2020, Deol was nominated for a Filmfare OTT Award for Best Actor in a Web Original Film. He plays the part of Baba Nirala in the MX Player original series Aashram, which debuted in 2020.
Deol’s antagonistic role brought him two nominations for the Filmfare OTT Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series in addition to a great deal of critical acclaim. Audiences and critics alike have concurred that Deol has produced an incredible second innings since the success of Aashram. Following that, Deol starred in a supporting role as the primary antagonist Abrar Haque in the Sandeep Reddy Vanga-directed film Animal (2023) opposite Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, and Rashmika Mandanna. As of December 13, 2023, the movie had made over ₹757 crore globally, making it a huge box office triumph. Even though the movie had mixed reviews, Deol’s portrayal as a silent psychopath attracted attention, even if some thought his cameo was too short. Deol’s performance was hailed by Firstpost as “menacing” and a highlight of the movie, saying that “[Deol] exhibits incredible expressive skills without the usage of speech, leaving fans in awe of his the capacity to portray feelings just through facial expressions. MensXP’s Aman Kumar praised Deol as well, calling him a “pop-cultural phenomenon”. Animal has strengthened Deol’s return.
