Product Description
‘One of the many intriguing aspects of The India Way is its use of a unique prism – the Mahabharata – to frame contemporary global strategic issues and India’s foreign policy concerns. Jaishankar’s opinions on topics ranging from non-alignment to balance of power will undoubtedly pique critical interest in India and elsewhere. There is little doubt that the book provides an essential window into Delhi’s shifting worldview… The burgeoning cohort of strategic communities can and must benefit from all statecraft traditions, including Western, Chinese, and Indian. Unsurprisingly, worldwide research on the Chinese tradition of statecraft has increased dramatically in recent decades. Jaishankar’s The India Way is a timely appeal to address the Indian deficit.’ – C. Raja Mohan, The Indian Express
‘Nothing should detract from the book’s primary goal, which is to clarify India’s image of itself and its behavior in global affairs… The India Way provides a completely accurate view of how India’s official thinking envisions the country’s international posture. To say that this volume is superb in both style and content is an understatement… It should be required reading.’ – Ashley J. Tellis, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
‘The India Way’ is a meditation on the origins of India’s behavior in the world arena, as well as the growth of Indian foreign policy during a period of extraordinary global change. Dr. Jaishankar’s qualifications are superb when it comes to analyzing India’s options in an increasingly volatile globe. And he does so with a scholar’s candor and a practitioner’s flair. – Harsh V. Pant, Hindustan Times.
‘The India Way is a timely message to the new India, which is growing stronger and claiming its rightful position in the world. The book is more than just an academic examination or intellectual exercise. It is the call of a serving External Affairs Minister with over four decades of significant diplomatic experience… Jaishankar’s strong, dispassionate, frank, and unambiguous articulation fulfills Thiruvalluvar’s definition of diplomacy in his poem: “Diplomacy is articulation according to the need of the time with profound knowledge and without fear.” — R. Viswanathan, The Week
‘An incumbent foreign minister rarely has the time or interest to publish a book about foreign affairs. However, when a seasoned diplomat with a scholarly mind like Dr. S. Jaishankar is at the helm, a lengthy work based on in-depth reflection is not unusual. The India Way is both a form of self-expression for a keen observer and admirer of international interactions, as well as a means of communicating to the rest of the world how India is adapting to historical changes… This book educates readers on what the future holds for an ambitious country. It is a clear exhortation to play the game of realpolitik. — Sreeram Chaulia, Asian Age
‘Some novels are read for the author, while others are read for the subject or style. Dr. S Jaishankar’s book should be read for all three purposes. Jaishankar, a former Foreign Secretary of India and current Foreign Minister has written about what could be India’s strategy, using an interesting technique of building a story by looking back (from Awadh and even the Mahabharata) to look ahead. – D. Suba Chandran from The Book Review Literary Trust
S. Jaishankar puts out the basic framework for India’s policymaking. He promotes a practical approach free of dogmas, a willingness to take chances, and the ability to engage multiple powers at once. He provides an outline of the evolution of India’s foreign policy, highlighting both the pitfalls and opportunities ahead… The India Way’s foreign policy framework provides an authoritative description of New Delhi’s worldview. – Stanly Johny of The Hindu
