Lizzo, born Melissa Viviane Jefferson, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and presenter. Born in Detroit, Michigan and raised in Texas, Lizzo started rapping as a teenager. At the age of 14, she formed a rap group named the ‘Cornrow Clique.’ For the next few years, she performed in collaboration with many indie artists and formed an all-female music trio named ‘The Chalice.’ The group released their debut album, ‘We Are the Chalice,’ in 2012. The indie album was a sleeper hit locally. Lizzo was eventually signed by the record label ‘Totally Gross National Product.’ Her first solo album, ‘Lizzobangers,’ was released in 2013. Childhood & Early Life
- Lizzo was born Melissa Viviane Jefferson, on April 27, 1988, in Detroit, Michigan. She grew up with two older siblings and spent the early few years of her life in her hometown.
- Although no member of her family belonged to the entertainment industry, they were all avid music lovers. Everyone in the family had their own taste in music. Growing up amidst this environment had a positive impact on Lizzo.
- Her family was deeply religious and believed in the Pentecostal church. She sang gospels and was part of church choirs. This influenced her music, too.
- At the age of 9, she moved with her family to Houston, Texas, where she started her real training in music. She learned to play the flute and listened to as much music as she could. - When she was based in Minneapolis, she was a member of a number of bands, including the electronic soul-pop duet known as Lizzo & the Larva Ink. During this time, she was a part of the formation of the Chalice, an all-female rap and R&B group consisting of three members.

Career Beginnings and Lizzobangers:2011-2015
While living in Minneapolis, Lizzo performed with groups like Lizzo & the Larva Ink, an electro-soul-pop duo. Her involvement in the Chalice team helped her form an all-female rap and R&B group during this Time. We Are the Chalice, Chalice’s first album, was a local success in 2012.
She released her hip-hop-focused debut album, Lizzobangers, on October 15, 2013. Big Grrrl Small World:2014-2015
She began working on new music immediately after releasing her first album. She participated in StyleLikeU’s What’s Underneath project in 2014, removing her clothes and discussing her body image. She described “My Skin” as “the thesis statement” of her upcoming second album, which she based on the experience. During an interview with Vice about body image, she said: Although you can change many aspects of your appearance, waking up in your skin unites us.
In September 2014, Lizzo sang “BoyTrouble” on Prince And 3rdEyeGirl’s album Plectrumelectrum alongside Chalice bandmates Sophia Eris and Claire de Lune. While working with Prince, Lizzo says the experience was “surreal, almost like a fairytale” and “something I will never actually get over.” Lizzo appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman on October 7, 2014.
The second studio album by Lizzo, Big Grrrl Small World, was made available on December 11, 2015. It was ranked 17 on Spin magazine’s “50 Best Hip-Hop Releases of 2015” list. She hosted MTV’s short-lived 2016 live music performance series Wonderland. On October 7, 2016, Lizzo released her first major-label extended play, Coconut Oil, after signing with Atlantic Records. “Good as Hell” appears on the Barbershop: The Next Cut soundtrack.
In addition to co-writing each song for the album, Lizzo enlisted Ricky Reed, Christian Rich, Dubbel Dutch, and Jesse Shatkin to produce it. Lizzo’s new album marked a departure from her previous alternative hip-hop work. A significant theme of the extended play is the theme of body positivity and self-love, along with the journey toward those ideals.
There were positive reviews of Coconut Oil from music critics. Lizzo’s latest album, Coconut Oil, is “an essential for healthy living,” according to Syra Aburto for Nylon. Lizzo’s Collaboration
